Christ the King Homily

How many of us hear or read this Gospel and understand it as Jesus’ great command to do good for others? Or even read it such that to get into heaven we have to DO good for others. I think that this is partly true.   I think that it’s not so much a command, but an invitation, and not so much about doing good, but seeing why we do the good. It’s about being truly human. This is a revelation of our own humanity. Which means it’s a revelation of salvation. Look at the words the king uses in the parable… He tells both groups what was done or not done. I think the key is their response…”Lord when did we see you…” This tells us that those who did the good, did the good because it was the right thing to do. They responded naturally, from their minds and hearts. They saw a need in another and they address that need. They did not do it because they were commanded, nor trying to earn points, or even to gain “heaven”. Which appears to be the attitude

33rd Sunday The Economy of Salvation

Image
Salvation is a lived experience of God’s love! Experiencing this divine love in a very personal way transforms us. It frees us, it empowers us. This is the Good News of Jesus Christ. This love is given freely to all for the salvation of all. There is a catch to all of this. Because it is not just about getting God’s love. The real transformation, the real freedom occurs when WE give that love. Think of this like an economy...an economy works when there movement, buying and selling. Economies gets hurt when nobody buys, or everybody sells. The economy of salvation is Love given by God, love received by us, and love given to others by us. This brilliant parable captures this so well. First of all, know that the “talents” are not “talents” per se, but a form of currency. And a talent is a boat load of money.   Today we would say hundred of thousands of dollars. So we have a generous person the Master, giving his workers a boat load of money.

When we hear these parables about the Kingdom of God, especially those that end with the king or groom coming back at the end and some are left out, killed or punished and other are rewarded….when we hear these do we think of the end of the world, or death and heaven? If so, not exactly wrong, BUT not quite correct either. A deeper understanding of them brings us closer to experience the salvation of Jesus Christ. Key to remember is that Jesus says the Kingdom of God is LIKE...he is making an analogy.  And analogies need to be explored and contemplated. One of our virtues as Catholics is that we maintain all of scripture in mind when we read it; we just don’t isolate one verse and interpret it in isolation from the rest of the text. So we remember Jesus said the Kingdom of God is at hand!  Meaning it can be here… And what Jesus said in John 10:10...He came so that we may have life in the full. See, the Kingdom of God is about experiencing life, as God li
